The WEEE directive

Electrical and electronic equipment may contain substances that are harmful if released to the environment. Examples are CFCs, batteries with cadmium and lead contained in glass. In addition, this equipment also includes a wide array of valuable materials. After recycling, these can be re-used to create new devices. Separate collection and recycling on the basis of the best available techniques therefore ensures that substances cannot harm our environment. Also, less new raw materials have to be mined, as useful (secondary) raw materials are released from recycled equipment.
